Friday, December 13, 2002 Breakdown: Wake Forest-Duke ABC Sports Online
Two of the elite teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference will duel on Saturday, as No. 13 Wake Forest makes the short trip from Winston-Salem to Durham to take on No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium (ABC, 1 p.m. ET).
Wake Forest is in its toughest stretch in the conference, with three consecutive games against top 10 opponents, two of them on the road. The first was at No. 9 Virginia on Tuesday night, where the Demon Deacons ran into a buzzsaw. Roger Mason Jr. scored 25 points in the Cavs' 86-74 win, which snapped Wake's five-game win streak. While Mason led four Cavaliers in double figures, the Deacs never had an answer inside for Travis Watson, who posted 17 rebounds.
Duke, on the other hand, has obliterated the majority of opponents -- including a 99-78 win over No. 3 Maryland on Thursday night -- a game that was spandex-tight for about 30 minutes, until Jason Williams and Mike Dunleavy took over. The duo combined for 55 points on the night, and the Dookies went 22-for-27 from the free-throw line. Despite their hiccup two weeks ago in Tallahassee, the Blue Devils' performance against the Terps left little debate as to who the best team in the country is.
Here's a look at the two teams as they head into Saturday's game.
Season record
Wake Forest: 13-4 (3-1, ACC)
Duke: 15-1 (4-1, ACC)
Head-to-head
First meeting this season.
Last year: Duke won 85-62 and 82-80.
Notes
Duke has attempted a league-high 390 three-pointers, and has drained 142 treys.
If the game is to be won at the foul line, Wake Forest holds a distinct advantage in free throw percentage, at 72.2 percent, compared to Duke, at 68.6.
Darius Songaila, who has had a history of getting into foul trouble, has only fouled out twice this season. Unfortunately for Wake, they came in the only two games where they've faced top 10 teams -- Dec. 4 at Kansas and on Tuesday at Virginia.
Duke is 62-4 at home since the 1997-98 season.
