BOX SCORE
WAILUKU, Hawaii -- Reggie Germany put on a show for the NFL
scouts at the Hula Bowl.
The Ohio State receiver caught nine passes for 108 yards as the
North rallied to beat the South 31-23 on Saturday.
| | | USC tight end Antoine Harris is congratulated after making a catch during the Hula Bowl. | He said the passes he caught weren't designed plays for him.
"That's just the way the ball went," said Germany, the MVP for
the North team. "The quarterbacks we had, they felt confident in
me. The team depended on me out there and I can't let my team
down."
The South squad, coached by Florida State's Bobby Bowden, jumped
out to a 23-7 lead in front of a sun-splashed, sellout crowd of
23,719 at War Memorial Stadium on the island of Maui.
"It was one of the more exciting all-star games," Bowden said.
"We couldn't get any momentum in the second half and we probably
only needed to make one or two plays to win the game."
Kansas State's Jonathan Beasley, the South MVP, completed 7 of
19 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
The North capitalized on two turnovers in the second half, which
led to two scores by Marcell Shipp of Massachusetts. He scored on a
1-yard run and caught a 12-yard TD pass from Jason McKinley,
drawing the North within two points.
The North took a 24-23 lead with 12:54 left on a 32-yard field
goal by Dan Stultz of Ohio State.
Montrell Coley of Hampton scored on a 1-yard run with 6:11 left
to cap off the win for the North.
"I like a team that comes back and shows emotion," said
Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer, the North's coach. "It is always
important to win. We got a couple of breaks in the second half."
The South defense dominated early, forcing four turnovers in the
first half. The turnovers led to 20 straight points for the South,
including two touchdown passes by Beasley, who replaced starter
Darnell Arceneaux of Utah.
Beasley threw a 40-yard TD pass to Utah's Steve Smith and a
25-yarder to Maryland's Matt Kalapinski, the game's leading rusher
with 51 yards on nine carries.
"Defensively, we played really well," Bowden said. "But we
turned the football over. We made mistakes and they scored."
Purdue's Drew Brees, the Big Ten's career leader in passing,
total offense and touchdowns, completed 10 of 20 passes for 119
yards and one touchdown for the North.
