No. 6 Oregon at No. 8 Oregon State
By Tim Brant
Special to BCSfootball.com

The Pac-10 has three teams in the Top 10 and two of them will meet Saturday in Corvallis, Ore. when No. 6 Oregon visits its most heated rival, the eighth-ranked Oregon State Beavers (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET). Everyone in the conference feels slighted by the polls and the writers in the East. They don't get near the attention from the East like they should. The reason, aside from the time difference is because they beat everyone outside the conference and now they are beating each other.

Reser Stadium
Oregon and Oregon State fans will jam into smallish Reser Stadium Saturday.
The old cliché of "The rankings and everything else goes out the window" holds true this weekend. This is the 104th time these teams are playing each other, and just beating the other team supercedes everything else, like Alabama-Auburn, UCLA-USC, and Army-Navy. They aren't thinking of bowls, they aren't thinking about rankings, only beating each other and being the king of the state.

  • It's going to be one hell of a shootout. It'll be one of those games in a great rivalry that should live up to its expectations. Everyone is starting to feel the pressure. Dennis Erickson closed off practices this week.

I also like the idea that it is being played at Reser Stadium -- a small stadium that holds about 35,000 but can hold its own in the volume department. It adds to the intrigue.

How good does it get? You have two of the best running backs in the nation in Oregon's Maurice Morris and Oregon State's Ken Simonton, and two outstanding quarterbacks that make very few mistakes. UO's Joe Harrington has had a terrific season and leads the Pac-10 in total offense, while OSU's Jonathan Smith has thrown 15 touchdowns to just six interceptions.

One of the keys to the game is how well Oregon defends Oregon State's wide-open attack. Dennis Erickson's offense goes almost into an ace-formation that takes all its wide receivers and spreads the defense sideline to sideline, forcing opposing teams to play a nickel package.

It causes many problems. The Beavers have talented wide receivers and a quarterback that can get them the ball. More importantly, a spread offense creates a lot of space for the Simonton. By spreading a defense thin, it gives him a lot of opportunities. Earlier this season, Simonton became the first Pac-10 running back to rush for 1,000 yards in his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.

It could come down to the kickers, Ryan Cesca and Josh Frankel. Cesca has been sensational for OSU, while Frankel has been just as good.

Both coaches feel their teams are peaking at the right time, and both teams feel the tank is still full. This is a heated rivalry. It's about beating one's neighbor.

    It's huge.
