Friday, December 13, 2002 LoVecchio gives the Irish veteran leadership By Terry Bowden Special to BCSfootball.com Bowden's Weekly Chat Show
In 1999, Notre Dame head coach Bob Davie went 5-7 in his third year in South Bend, putting him on the hot seat. Then, last year, he went 9-2 in the regular season and landed a spot in the BCS. He was taken off the hot seat, but then he lost the BCS game 41-9. Now he's back on the hot seat.
| | | Saturday may be Bob Davie's final game on Notre Dame's sideline. | Going into the 2001 season, where exactly does Coach Davie sit? There are only two seats at Notre Dame: The hot seat and the seat you sit on before you sit on the hot seat. As for where Davie sits, take your pick.
The real question is: Where does the Notre Dame football team stand going into the season?
Matt LoVecchio is penciled in at starting quarterback. He was a third-string true freshman last year when the season began. This year, he is the returning starter who led the Irish to eight straight regular season victories. That alone should be worth an extra win or two this season, and should put the Fighting Irish back in the BCS.
Terry Bowden was the head coach at Auburn from 1993-98. He is ABC's college football studio analyst and writes a daily notebook for BCSfootball.com.
